GPO's Print Purchases

By Lisa Cross, Business Editor -- graphic arts online, 7/1/2004

The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) awarded nearly $130 million of work to outside providers during the first five months of 2004, reports ABC Advisors, which offers services aimed at assisting printers in supplementing their commercial work through government opportunities.

During the five-month period, the GPO awarded nearly $60 million of work—$59,308,250, to be exact—having a per-job value of $25,000 and above. This portion of the work included 787 large jobs, placed through competitive bidding from the GPO's 21 procurement offices, consisting of 411 single-bid jobs and 376 orders placed under term contracts.

The rest of the work in the five-month period, amounting to a combined value of $69 million, consisted of 49,243 smaller jobs awarded to private-sector companies.

The largest concentration of total volume, according to ABC Advisors, was bought through the GPO's Washington, D.C. Central Procurement Office, where work orders amounted to $33 million. The average production time for these jobs was 29 days.

FYI

The Environmental Protection Agency reports that toxic chemical releases into the environment rose 5% in 2002 to 4.79 billion pounds, marking only the second such increase reported by the agency in nearly two decades.
