Cold-Glue Perfect Binder

Matik North America introduces the RC1 on-demand perfect binder, manufactured by DiBiTech & Co., Guesten, Germany.

The RC-1 is a single-clamp, zero-make-ready, cold-glue perfect binder that represents the first truly new approach to adhesive binding in many years, say Matik officials. On the RC-1, job size format changes are automatic. The operator simply inserts a book into the book clamp; sensors measure the book thickness, then transmit the data to all the components of the machine, including the cover-stamping unit. The operator then loads new covers into the feeder and starts binding.

Additionally, the RC-1 uses a patented vertical mill comprising two counter-rotating shafts that carry specially designed offset cutters.

The machine's vertical mill allows cold glue to penetrate the book block end far better than traditional systems that use hot glue, while using much less adhesive, company officials claim. Additionally, the cold glue is applied with a pressurized extrusion gun instead of with a heated glue pot and application roller. Cold glue avoids several problems associated with hot-melt units, such as heat-up time, expense, fumes, and operator safety.

Ink Control System

Quad/Tech, Inc. introduces its Precisa state-of-the-art ink control system, and a precision-engineered fountain system that can control up to 120 fountains for newspapers and up to 20 fountains for commercial printing operations.

Precisa segmented ink key technology maintains accuracy, regardless of light or dark coverage, claims the manufacturer, adding that hardened steel segment construction gives Precisa maximum longevity and increased accuracy.

Precisa enables adjustment capability down to 0.25 microns. Individual gear motors and a RISC processor drive the ink control system's steel key construction with hardened tips. Once a move is made, CIP4-compatible Precisa confirms the move with a feedback signal to ensure system accuracy, says Quad/Tech. Using the system's trackball to drag and drop, or by adjusting in percentages, ink key profiles can be controlled by segment, zone, fountain, or the entire press.

Prepress Workflow

Printing Developments, Inc. is featuring a versatile new CTP plate product created to make printing simpler by streamlining prepress workflow, according to the company.

Delta 830, a thermal polymer CTP plate for sheetfed and web printers, has been designed for prepress efficiency and on-press performance. It complements PDI's other CTP products, Prisma and Prisma Steel.

According to the manufacturer, just one simple step with Delta 830 gets printers on press faster. Out of the imager, Delta 830's single-stage processor works in less than two minutes. With a single piece of processing equipment, users save up to six times the floor space compared to processing lines that need baking ovens, says PDI. Because Delta 830 requires no baking, printers reduce prepress and on-press variables, such as possible pre-baking imaging problems and post-bake plate cracking that contribute to downtime.
