Ranking the Quick Print Giants
In terms of revenue, last year proved to be a tough hand for printers within this market segment.

GAM's ranking of the top 100 quick printing firms in North America shows that, like most businesses, 2002 was a hard year for printers within this segment.
On the one hand, more participants in the 2002 Quick Print Giants survey, which was conducted in December by Reed Research Group, reported that they did not experience any growth in their revenues over the previous year—no surprise, given the negative state of the economy.
In 2002, the number of quick printers boasting an increase in revenues compared to the previous year declined for the second year in a row, from 64 printers in the 2001 Quick Print Giants survey to just 47 printers.
Ups and downsBut while individual revenues were down as a whole in 2002, the total average level among Quick Print Giants survey participants did increase slightly over the previous year.
In 2001, average revenues among all survey respondents were $4,762,500; in 2002, that average grew to $5,327,600, an increase of 12% [note that this average sales figure for 2002 does not include Kinko's, which appears in the 2002 Quick Print Giants survey for the first time. Since the company's 2002 revenues totaled $2 billion, including its figures in the average would present an unrealistic picture of the industry].
The point is that in spite of the economy and other possible foreboding forces at play, there do exist quick print shops that are increasing their revenues.
Three of the top five Quick Print Giants—St. Joseph Digital Solutions, The Superior Group, and JKG Group—all posted double-digit increases over the previous year. In fact, 27 of this year's participants posted double-digit revenue increases.
Survivors healthier today"While consolidation among small commercial and quick print shops has taken place, those firms are healthier than they were a year ago," says Vincent Naselli, director of TrendWatch Graphic Arts, which regularly surveys printers to monitor industry trends.
He adds, "Over the last three or four years, most of the exigencies have come on the lower end. But the companies that have survived are healthier than they were three years ago. These companies have learned how to marry up to their clients better than those that have left the market."
The TrendWatch Graphic Arts Forecast 2003 states that small and quick printers will have to increasingly compete with the independent desktop environment, and keep trying to move upmarket to stay competitive.
Also, while non-print services are more critical than ever, adding these services to remain profitable doesn't just mean adding equipment. Quick printers, like larger-size firms, have to become customer-driven, says TrendWatch.
Expanded servicesQuick print firms are taking note of this fact. For instance, Kinko's, which employs 20,000 people among roughly 1,100 locations, offers color printing, finishing and presentation services, Internet access, video conferencing, outsourcing, facilities management, Web-based printing, and document management solutions.
Sir Speedy, which has 1,000 locations worldwide, has total revenues of $400 million. It has added a full line of business document services in addition to providing electronic publishing, digital file transfer, print-on-demand, and short-run color printing. Says company representative Bridget DiRico, business document services—while comprising individual products such as on-line ordering, document management, and scan-to-archive services—is designed to provide a complete convenience and solution set for Sir Speedy customers.
Quick printers also are offering services in offset and wide-format digital printing, prepress, art and design, mailing and list maintenance, and finishing.
Interestingly, the independent quick print shop demonstrating the largest revenue increase from 2001 to 2002—34%—is On Demand Technologies, Overland Park, Kan. The company sticks to its market niche, copying, providing no other services except a small amount of multicolor printing.
