President Bush visited Dixie Printing & Packaging Corporation, Glen Burnie, Md., to speak in support of an economic stimulus package designed to keep the U.S. economy from faltering. Bush's visit was prompted by a letter he received from Dixie Printing's owner, A. Newth Morris III, urging for repeal of the alternative minimum tax and other tax cuts and incentives.
"Some might ask why, in the midst of war, I would come to Dixie Printing," said President Bush. "And the answer is, because we fight in the war on two fronts. We fight a war at home; and part of the war we fight is to make sure that our economy continues to grow."
The President continued, "One of the effects of the attacks has been on our economy. Make no mistake about it: September 11 affected economic growth, and our government must respond in an effective way. And so I'm here to talk about an important part of the home front security, and that is our economy."
Based on a poll it conducted in late September, the Printing Industries of America (PIA), Alexandria, Va., concluded that the terrorist attacks on America will hurt the printing industry. PIA stated, "The difference between expected industry sales and profits for 2001 and 2002 before and after September 11 is an anticipated loss of approximately $6 billion in sales and $1.5 billion in profits."
