Printers Urged to Help Support Energy Policy

It is not business as usual in the nation's capital. As Congress and the President focus on the war on terrorism, many of the legislative issues important to the graphic arts industry and all other industries will temporarily be put on the back burner. However, even though the larger interests of the nation are the focus now, lawmakers will get back to the business of domestic policy and legislation—and the printing industry must be ready.
One issue important to the printing industry that is linked to the fight against terrorism is the need to rely less on the Middle East for fuel. The Printing Industries of America (PIA), Alexandria, Va., is asking printers to write to their senators in support of a broad-based national energy policy. PIA has been supporting such a policy for the past year in response to domestic energy shortages and higher fuel costs that caused major problems for many printing companies across the country.
In August, the House approved a massive energy package valued at $33.5 billion that would substantially increase America's domestic supplies of coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear power. The measure also seeks to improve the nation's energy efficiency (in both production and consumption), conservation, and research and development.
PIA is asking that printers contact their senators on the matter. A statement on PIA's Web site reads: "In the wake of the terrorist attacks, Congress is rightly focused on national security issues. However, less attention is now focused on a critical need, our energy independence to ensure supplies today and for the future. Write your senators so they understand that only a broad-based national energy policy will guarantee our long-term energy needs."
