Print 01 Must See 'ems

Staff -- graphic arts online, 10/1/2001

The "Must See 'ems" program, which was organized for Print 01 by William C. Lamparter (PrintCom Consulting) and sponsored by the Graphic Arts Show Company, comprised the most compelling products, services, and exhibits at the event as selected by a panel of industry consultants and trade magazine editors.

The Must See 'ems and the accompanying Worth-a-Look selections (judged important for niche markets and selected groups of printers or converters) were derived from over 200 nominations.

Following are Overall Booth Presentation selections, which were chosen because they feature an integrated print manufacturing process and/or several new significant products. [In future issues, GAM will feature in its Product News department Must See 'ems selections that were categorized under Production Technology and Individual Products.]

Heidelberg USA

Eight solution areas feature the Prinect concept, which integrates workflow and print manufacturing (including CIP4). Solution areas include: Prinect, Prepress, Digital Print, Quick Print, Commercial, Industrial, Newspaper, and Finishing.

Komori America

Using a set of digital tools collectively called the Color Connection, Komori demonstrated its concept of computer integrated manufacturing in the "Pressroom of the Future."

All presses in the Komori booth were linked to a central server known as the K-Station; prepress data (job ticket, ink key profiles, etc.) were sent to the K-Station and transferred via a network to the appropriate press. Press activity in real time is monitored at the K-Station and incorporated into a job management system.

Must See 'ems Products: Lithrone 640 digital press (shown), formerly the 40" Project D press.

Also featured: Lithrone 540 perfector (North American debut); Lithrone 640, Series 4045 (featuring CoCure UV); Lithrone 628P (printing with stochastic screening); and Lithrone 620 with coater (featuring polyester plates).

Xerox Corporation

The citadel of toner and now an entry into the direct-imaging offset press arena based on Presstek technology in partnership with Ryobi and Adast, Xerox demonstrated an array of printing hardware and solutions designed to push the company into the commercial printing world with the goal of becoming a leading supplier.

The centerpiece of the Xerox exhibit was an amphitheater presentation of the FutureColor digital press, now branded the DocuColor iGen3.

Also featured in the Xerox exhibit was the integrated production of books from a stack of paper to a finished product. Xerox demos included: 1:1 marketing communications, custom catalogs, book factory, just-in-time product and engineering documentation, and personalized financial statements.

Must See 'ems Products: DocuColor iGen3 digital press (shown), formerly FutureColor; Imation/Xerox proofing system (Imation Matchprint Professional Server output to DocuColor 12 laser printer on Xerox/Matchprint laser proofing papers).
