A representative of the Printing Industries of America (PIA), Alexandria, Va., attended President Bush's signing of his congressionally approved tax plan. The tax package includes a $1.35 billion tax cut, the first major federal tax cut in 21 years, and many provisions that are important to printers, such as phasing out the death tax, reducing the personal alternative minimum tax, and raising the contribution and benefit thresholds on 401(k) plans and individual retirement accounts.
Witnessing the bill-signing ceremony was PIA's government affairs manager, Felicia Cheek, who was instrumental in getting the death tax repeal included in the tax package.
"Repealing the death tax has been a top tax priority for members of the industry for years, and I'm happy to have been a part of the success," says Cheek. "Members of our industry who have worked their entire lives to build a business can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel."
Cheek, a native of London, Ky., graduated from Berea College in Berea, Ky. Prior to joining PIA, Cheek served on the staff of Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-KY) and Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY). At PIA she is responsible for policy research and lobbying efforts on healthcare reform, taxes, and legislative and regulatory issues involving the printing industry.
