  • Printing Firms Opt for Digital

Printing company investments indicate rush to digital presses

Staff Report -- Graphic Arts Online, October 26, 2009

The economy may have put investment in offset presses on hold, but a steady stream of reports shows printing companies installing digital printing presses. Over the last two weeks, the following firms have reported buying digital printing equipment:

Integrated Book Technology installed an Océ Digital Book Factory at distributor Books International's fulfillment center in Dulles, VA. The integrated on-demand digital production line, the first of its kind implemented in the U.S. prints books to order in quantities as small as one. The company, more widely known as IBT Global, teamed with Books International, a book distributor, to launch the print-on-demand operation.

Presentation and promotional packaging printer, The Colad Group, Buffalo, purchased a Xeikon 6000 digital color press.

DS Graphics, Lowell, MA, acquired and installed an HP Indigo 7000. The company recently purchased LVI Print Optimization (formerly LaVigne Inc.), a firm well known for its adopt of HP Indigo technology.

GraphicSource Corp., Skokie, IL, purchased a Screen Truepress 344 direct imaging offset press. "We analyzed the print market and identified short-run, digital color printing as a market segment in which we could be quite successful," says Preston Berman, president.

Victor Graphics, Baltimore, installed a Kodak Digimaster EX300 Digital Book Factory; the sheetfed monochrome book line complements the Victor Graphic's color Kodak NexPress.

Robbins Graphics LLC, Carmel, IN, purchased a 64" Mutoh ValueJet printer. The company produces signs, vehicle graphics and banners on a variety of media including a waterproof glossy paper by Solvex. Primary clients include print brokers, advertising and marketing companies, builders and developers, museums, Eli Lilly, and The Indianapolis Zoo.

KC Printing Services,  Lake Barrington, IL, also added a Screen Truepress 344 direct imaging press.
