  • Shorewood Packaging Consolidates Operations

Lithographic printing at Newport News, VA plant will cease and be moved to locations in Indianapolis, Toronto and Aguascalientes, Mexico.

By Graphic Arts Online Staff -- Graphic Arts Online, July 21, 2009

NEW YORK— As part of an overall strategy to align with customer needs, Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, announced today that it is realigning its lithographic printing operations in North America. The core of this change is the discontinuation of the lithographic printing operation within its Newport News, Va., facility, and the transition of related customers to Shorewood’s plants in Indianapolis, Ind., Toronto, Canada, and Aguascalientes, Mexico.
“Decisions like this are often painful but we have solid plans in place to seamlessly transition our customers to the new operations,” said Jeff Molchan, vice president of consumer products sales for Shorewood Packaging. “We also expect to provide added value to customers through the world-class quality and state-of-the-art presses at the Indianapolis and Toronto plants.”
The lithographic printing operation at Newport News prints and converts packaging for the consumer products industry. Shorewood will continue to operate its gravure printing operation at Newport News, which prints and converts packaging primarily for the tobacco industry.
The discontinuation of the lithographic printing operation at the Newport News plant will affect approximately 100 employees, who will be eligible to receive severance and outplacement assistance.
“Our litho team at Newport News has made many contributions to our business and we will do all we can to assist them during the transition process,”
said Brad Tackaberry, vice president, global manufacturing for Shorewood Packaging.
